I don’t love Crocs. But my reasoning probably isn’t the same that most people will give you.
Most people will say “they’re so ugly” or that they lack arch support. I’m not too worried with how they look as the point is function, not fashion with these, and I never buy shoes with arch support.
And I do think they actually have one big thing going for them: that wide toe box. I love that they have a natural foot shape that lets your toes splay.
But what I don’t like is that they never fit securely on your feet. Even in sports mode, I always see kids slipping and sliding around in them, and anytime I’ve tried to wear them, my toes get tired out from gripping to keep them on. They also are a massive brick of stiff EVA that’s cutting you off from sensory feedback and forcing you to clomp around with limited movement in the shoe. Some cushioning is nice, but this is overkill. And they have a heel-to-toe drop, which means instead of standing in a neutral position like you do when you’re barefoot, it’s like you’re falling forward all day, and your body is constantly adjusting to compensate for this.
But I get why people love them. They’re incredibly convenient—you can slip them on in seconds, wear them to the beach, pool, boat (which is what they were originally designed for), or while doing yard work, then simply rinse them off when you’re done.
So, I wanted to find barefoot alternatives that offer all of the features people love about Crocs, without the compromises. These barefoot shoes and sandals are easy to slip on, lightweight, washable, and designed to let your feet move naturally. I’ve included options for both kids and adults.

When I first tried Igor over 10 years ago, they had the cutest jelly sandals for my new walker. But then I discovered barefoot shoes, and I realized their thick, stiff soles were terrible for him actually walking.
Fortunately, Igor has been expanding into barefoot shoes, including jellies and Croc alternatives — and the Tijuca sandals are proof they’ve figured it out. These are one of the best alternatives to Crocs for kids as they go from size EU22 through 34. They’re made of light EVA that’s flexible enough to roll right up, and they have a wider, more natural foot shape compared to Igor’s original styles. They also have a closed back and a velcro strap over the top of the foot. Yes, this means a few more seconds to put on, but most kids can still do it themselves, and they won’t be flopping off.

The Vivobarefoot Ultra Bloom allows you to keep almost all of the same features of crocs, just with a thinner, flatter sole. As Vivos, they have a similar fit and minimal feel. The Ultras are water-shoes made with sustainable algae Bloom foam. They’re flexible and durable. They’re also full of holes so any water can drain out and the shoes can dry quickly. These start in toddler sizes and go all the way up to a Men’s US 15, so they’re a great alternative to Crocs for adults and kids.
MTNG Free Care Clogs

MTNG (I think it’s short for Mustang) is a Spanish brand making fairly affordable barefoot shoes alongside a line of conventional footwear. I recently spotted them at the Barefoot Shoe Fair in Frankfurt, and they had a lot of great styles with solid-looking quality.
The Free Care Clogs immediately jumped out at me as the perfect barefoot alternative to a Croc. As of August 2026, I only see the clogs available in adult sizes, but at the Fair I saw a full kids’ line too. Hopefully that lands on the website soon, and MTNG expands shipping or picks up retailers — currently shipping is only available to Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and Germany.
The Free Care Clogs are zero-drop, super light, and flexible with a grippy, lugged sole. They have a full back in addition to a separate strap, which can hang around the back or flip up over the top of the foot, just like a Croc. They’re made from a similar foam to Crocs, with drainage holes around the bottom and ones over the top of the foot double as a spot for your Jibbitz.

They have a more secure fit with a full back and a velcro strap that goes over the top of the foot.

Boatilus is a brand I recently discovered at the Barefoot Shoe Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, and they’re bringing a serious sustainability focus to the barefoot shoe space. Their signature material, BOATIGUM®, blends recycled PET with natural ingredients like oyster shell and Italian lemon zest — and yes, that means their shoes actually smell like lemon (the scent doubles as a natural antibacterial, not just a gimmick). They also use recycled materials across much of the lineup, right down to the shoe boxes.
They’ve recently been expanding into more barefoot-specific styles, including the Cloggy — a zero-drop, flexible clog that’s a genuinely great alternative to a Croc — along with a super-flexible jelly sandal for kids.
